Why Electroless Nickel?

Our client wanted a refined, motorsport-correct appearance without resorting to paint or powder coating. Electroless nickel plating was the ideal solution. Unlike decorative finishes, electroless nickel forms a uniform coating thickness across the entire part, including internal passages and complex geometry. This makes it especially well suited for brake calipers, where consistency and durability matter just as much as aesthetics.

Working with Cast Aluminum
It's worth noting that these OE Brembo calipers are manufactured from low-pressure cast aluminum, which is inherently more porous than billet or forged alternatives. Porosity can present challenges during plating, as trapped gases and surface irregularities can affect final appearance. Proper preparation is critical. Each caliper underwent thorough cleaning, surface conditioning, and process control to ensure the best possible result before plating began.
Our goal was to closely mimic the satin metallic tone associated with AP Racing's electroless nickel finishes, while respecting the limitations of the base material. The result is a subtle, high-end surface that highlights the caliper's shape and branding without looking overly polished or artificial. Minor texture remains, as expected with cast aluminum, but overall uniformity and color consistency exceeded expectations.
