What to Know Before You Buy

RWD vs xDrive Fitment

The G80 M3 is available in RWD (base and Competition) and xDrive (Competition only from 2022). Spring kits are different for RWD vs xDrive due to different front suspension geometry. H&R Sport (28616-1) fits RWD; H&R Sport (28616-3) fits xDrive. H&R Super Sport has separate RWD (50496-77) and xDrive (50498-77) kits. Always verify your drivetrain before ordering.

Adaptive M Suspension

All G80 M3 models come with Adaptive M Suspension (EDC). The springs in this guide are designed to work with the factory electronic dampers. Swift Spec-R works with both standard and Adaptive M. H&R Sport and Super Sport require Adaptive M. The H&R VTF (23026-1) fits RWD M3/M4 G80 from 2021–2022.

Alignment & Camber

Drops under 1.2" (H&R Sport) typically stay within factory alignment specs. The H&R Super Sport (-1.4" front) may require camber plates or adjustable arms for optimal tire wear. The Swift Spec-R (-1.3" F) sits in between. Always budget for a professional alignment after installation.

Factory Shocks & Ride Quality

All kits are designed to work with factory Adaptive M dampers. The G80 is a relatively new platform, so most cars have low mileage. If your M3 has high mileage, worn dampers can make any spring feel bouncy. Consider Bilstein B6 or KW V1 if you want to refresh the dampers while lowering.

Best for Handling

Swift Spec-R Lowering Springs

$530 $318 • Japan • Linear Rate

Swift Spec-R Lowering Springs for 2020+ BMW M3 G80

The Swift Spec-R (4X930R) is the only linear-rate spring in this guide, designed for track-oriented G80 M3 owners who want predictable handling. It delivers a 1.3" front and 1.0" rear drop — moderate by G80 standards but tuned for optimal suspension geometry within the OEM shock's usable stroke. Swift's H5S.TW proprietary material and manufacturing process aim to reduce unsprung mass and eliminate coil bind.

The Spec-R is popular with HPDE and SCCA competitors who run the M3 on track. Works with both Adaptive M and standard suspension. Japan-made. At $318 on sale, it's the most affordable option in this guide and the best choice for owners who prioritize handling over maximum drop.

Best Overall

H&R Sport Springs

$599 $352 • Made in Germany • Progressive Rate

H&R Sport Springs for 2021-2023 BMW M3 G80

The H&R Sport (28616-1) delivers a 1.2" front and 0.4" rear drop on the G80 M3 RWD and M3 Competition RWD. Designed specifically for models with Adaptive M Suspension, it provides a balanced stance with a progressive spring rate that maintains daily comfort while reducing body roll and improving turn-in. The conservative rear drop (-0.4") keeps the car level and avoids the forward rake of some aggressive kits.

H&R springs are cold-wound from 54SiCr6 steel in Germany. For M3 Competition xDrive (2022–2023), use the H&R Sport 28616-3 variant. The Sport is the best all-around choice for G80 owners who want a noticeable drop without compromising ride quality.

Drop by Application

Application Front Drop Rear Drop
2021–2026 BMW M3 Sedan / M3 Competition Sedan G80 (RWD) -1.2" -0.4"
Pros
  • Best ride quality in this guide
  • Conservative rear drop — no camber correction needed
  • Fits base M3 and M3 Competition RWD
  • Made in Germany
  • Strong community validation on G80
Cons
  • Requires Adaptive M Suspension
  • Rear drop very conservative (-0.4")
  • Separate kit needed for xDrive
Best Aggressive Drop

H&R Super Sport Lowering Springs

$599 $352 • Made in Germany • Progressive Rate

The H&R Super Sport delivers the largest fixed drop in this guide. The RWD kit (50496-77) provides 1.4" front and 1.0" rear on M3 Sedan and M3 Competition RWD. The xDrive kit (50498-77) provides 1.4" front and 0.6" rear on M3 Competition xDrive (2022–2023). Both use a firmer progressive rate than the H&R Sport for a more aggressive stance.

Camber correction is recommended at -1.4" front. The asymmetric rear drop on xDrive (-0.6" vs -1.0" on RWD) reflects the different rear suspension geometry. Made in Germany with H&R's standard quality.

H&R VTF Adjustable Lowering Springs

$1,580 $1,264 • Made in Germany • Height Adjustable

H&R VTF Adjustable Lowering Springs for BMW M3 G80

The H&R VTF (23026-1) is the only adjustable option in this guide. It fits M3 Sedan G80, M4 Coupe G82, and M2 G87 RWD from 2021–2022. You can fine-tune ride height to your preference without committing to a fixed drop. The VTF (Variable Tieferlegungs Federn) design works with factory electronic dampers.

At roughly four times the cost of fixed springs, the VTF is for owners who want flexibility — perhaps a conservative daily setting with the option to go lower for shows or photos. Installation is more involved than fixed springs. For 2022–2023 models, check H&R VTF 23026-2. Made in Germany.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need new shocks when installing lowering springs?

No. All kits in this guide are designed to work with factory Adaptive M dampers. If your M3 has high mileage, the shocks may be worn. In that case, consider refreshing them with Bilstein B6 or similar when you install springs.

Will lowering springs void my factory warranty?

Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a dealer cannot void your entire warranty for installing aftermarket parts. However, if a warranty claim is directly related to the modification (e.g., premature strut wear), the dealer can deny that specific claim.

Do lowering springs affect ride quality?

Yes. Conservative drops (H&R Sport at -1.2" F) maintain good comfort. Aggressive drops (H&R Super Sport at -1.4" F) are noticeably firmer. Progressive springs generally ride better than linear springs on the street. Pairing springs with worn dampers will make any kit feel harsh.

What's the difference between progressive and linear spring rates?

Progressive springs have a variable rate — soft initially for comfort, then stiffening under compression. They suit daily driving. Linear springs (like Swift Spec-R) have a constant rate — firmer overall but more predictable for track use.

Should I get lowering springs or coilovers?

Lowering springs offer a set drop at lower cost ($318–$1,264 vs. $1,500+ for coilovers). If you want adjustable ride height and damping, coilovers are the better choice. The H&R VTF bridges the gap with height adjustment but no damping control. Check our Suspension Buyers Guide for a full comparison.

I have an M3 Competition xDrive. Which kits fit?

The Swift Spec-R works with all G80 M3 variants. For H&R, use the H&R Sport 28616-3 (xDrive) or H&R Super Sport 50498-77 (xDrive). The H&R VTF (23026-1) does not support xDrive.
