The Cusco Type RS 2 Way Limited Slip Differential for the rear of Mazda MX-5 models from 1989 to 1993 is a high-performance drivetrain component designed to enhance traction and handling during spirited driving or track use. Engineered with a focus on reduced friction and improved response, this LSD features springs that absorb initial torque, providing a gentler engagement compared to the Type MZ. Its adjustable settings allow users to select two of three configurations through a simple overhaul, offering customizable performance. The Type RS's low initial torque results in less power loss, translating into quicker lap times and improved cornering stability. Constructed with precision components, it ensures durability and consistent performance under demanding conditions.

Designed specifically for 1989–1993 Mazda MX-5 models, this rear LSD is a direct replacement for the stock differential, suitable for street, track, or spirited driving applications. It is compatible with vehicles equipped with the appropriate chassis and drivetrain configurations, offering an upgrade over standard limited-slip units. Installation involves standard bolt-on procedures, making it suitable for experienced enthusiasts and professional mechanics. The kit includes the LSD unit itself, with no additional components specified. This Cusco Type RS LSD is ideal for drivers seeking enhanced traction, reduced lap times, and improved handling characteristics on both street and race tracks.

Overview

If you need the absolute best in traction for your Miata, a Cusco LSD (Limited Slip Differential) is what you seek. Cusco LSDs allow you to chose 2 of 3 settings with each unit just with a simple overhaul.

In the Type RS, it's springs absorb the initial torque. Compared to the Type MZ, the Type RS' initial torque comes on more gently. The response of the RS has lower friction and in turn, is better.

The Low Initial Torque means Less Power Loss. This equates to lower lap times, even for a mildly tuned vehicle. The low pressure on the clutch plates improves durability and lowers chatter. To top it off, the reduced pressure allows the driver to change the LSD oil less frequently.

Steady coil movement is assured by special precision springs set in the pressure plate. These springs are made to be resilient and allow for stable operation. Because these plates do not utilize a cone clutch, they do not stick and allow for increased longevity.

The Type RS transfers extreme power without slipping and responds quickly with pedal inputs. This differential is perfect, whether you're drag racing or going for huge drifts.

Three Ways To Set Up Your LSD

  • A 1 Way LSD is specially suited for front wheel drive cars and the front axle of AWD cars. It activates only under acceleration, allowing the better handling when you lift off the throttle. This is a great way to improve lap times.
  • A 1.5-way LSD activates fully under acceleration, but does not activate fully under deceleration. This decreases understeer compared to a 2-way LSD. This is recommended for drivers having difficulty with 2-way LSD understeer, or the braking on a one-way LSD.
  • A 2-way LSD is recommended on rear wheel drive cars and AWD rear axle cars.. Because it activates on both acceleration and deceleration, it is recommended for those who prefer hot driving action and big angle drift.
