Monotube design shock absorbers, sometimes referred to as high pressure nitrogen gas shock absorbers, have a single tube in which the shock components operate in. This design works without a reservoir tube, instead the oil capacity is controlled with a floating piston. The floating piston is important in keeping the oil and nitrogen gas separated during the stroke of the shock absorber, when the damper is controlling the suspension of the vehicle.
